PHOTOGRAPHIC

simultaneity
Digital C-print photographs which capture moments when the interior and exterior of a building collide, when private experience melds with the surrounding architecture: creating a simultaneous private and public space as well as a simultaneous architectural interior and exterior. These works give the viewer a sense of place and it's context in space, to create a fuller sense of ‘being there’.

Future works will focus on buildings that are set to be demolished.

The images are made using a digital camera but the images are not digitally manipulated as it is important to the concept of the series to capture moments of simultaniety during the process of taking the photographs.

DRAWINGS
speaking in public

Over 100 site-specific drawings from 1997 to the present from places such as NYC, Poland, Belfast, Cushendall-N. Ireland, Copenhagen, Rotterdam and WTC. These works use found paper and architectural plans from each site, with stream-of conscious writing and wax. The architectural plans are reduced and transferred to the found paper, followed by stream-of-conscious writing, which is then partially erased, covered in wax and the writing continues. The drawings reference the intersection between public [the site] and private [the writing] space, as well as an allegory developed by Freud for how the unconscious enters consciousness. He developed this in reference to a children's toy made of wax that can be written on and then ‘erased’ but which leaves a residue onto the new text; similar to how fragments of the unconscious enter into consciousness.

PUBLIC ART

beingthere

A series of research-based projects about a developing relationship to architecture, with a set of responses including a net.art piece, an installation, a curated exhibition and book, shown simultaneously in private | public | virtual | physical locations | These projects are about developing a relationship to a space; a psychological, experiential relationship to architecture and surrounding ideas of (dis)location, simultaniety and reflection | the beingthere series is distinctive in that it deals with developing an individual relationship with architecture; culminating in simultaneous intra-disciplinary responses to this experience on many levels [local/global, private/public, virtual/physical] in order to create a full sense of being there | through this process, architecture and space/place will be understood from other perspectives: experienced from within versus considered from the outside, as an experiential environment versus an object in space.
